earthquake rattles west hollywood. it is the second this week that a quake hits southern california there. according to the u.s. geological survey, the epicenter was located two miles from west hollywood. damage has been reported a 3.2 magnitude earthquake shook beverly hills. that was on monday. so let's send it back to john. he is in charlotte at a diner this morning. and i understand with cheese fries in front of you, as well. >> yeah, these in fact are the cheese fries. we are live this morning at the midnight diner in charlotte because the convention, it's over. the hall is shut down. president obama made his case last night officially accepting his party's nomination. now, the faithful in the crowd loved it. the critics, may be less so. the reviews have been mixed, but his mission was clear, to frame the election as a choice, a choice between two very different visions of america's future. now, cnn's dana bash is with me here now and to me, it felt like

a safe speech, almost reserved. >> that's right. you know, i agree. it's hard for him to take 234i chances right now. and the reason is he framed it at the beginning, he said you elected me to tell the truth. and sometimes the truth isn't easy. barack obama accepted his party's nomination with a kind of soaring rhetoric that got him elected four years ago, except hope and change were replaced by a reality check. >> i recognize that times have changed since i first spoke to this convention. times have changed and so have i. i'm no long eveer just a candid. i'm the president. >> reporter: yes, we can, now a plea for patience. >> i never said this journey would be easy and i won't promise that now. yes, our path is harder, but at

least to a better place. yes, our road is longer, but we travel together. we don't turn back. we leave no one behind. >> reporter: the obama campaign ripped in to mitt romney for not offering enough specifics at his acceptance speech last week. the president took that a step further. >> they want your vote, but they don't want you to know their plan. and that's because all they have to offer is the same prescriptions they've had for the last 30 years. have a surplus, try a tax cut. deficit too high? try another. feel a cold coming on? take two tax cuts, roll back some regular races and call us in the morning. >> reporter: he offered new promises for a second term. >> i'm asking you to rally around a set of goals for your country, goals in manufacturing, energy, education, national security, and the deficit.

>> reporter: some specifics, a vow to create 1 million new manufacturing jobs. cut growth of college tuition in half over the next ten years. and cut oil imports in half by 2020. vice president joe biden took on the role of eyewitness to the president while he made tough decisions. >> ladies and gentlemen, i'm here to tell you what i think you already know. but i watch it up close. bravery resides in the heart of barack obama and time and time again i witnessed him summon it. this man has courage in his soul, compassion in his heart, and a spine of steel. >> reporter: and biden delivered the bumper sticker line he loves. >> we can now proudly say what you've heard me say the last six months. osama bin laden is dead and general motors is alive. >> reporter: though the night belonged to the president, the democratic nominee from 2004

offered one of the most memorable one liners of the night. >> ask osama bin laden if he is better off now than he was four years ago. >> reporter: and when it comes to the lasting images from this convention, it is this moment, former congresswoman gabby giffords shot through the head just last year and now walking without a cane on stage to recite the pledge of allegiance. >> liberty and justice for all. >> dan inna we're joined by mar cardona. you were in the hall last night. first of all, let me just ask, how did it go over will? >> i think it worked beautifully in the hall. i mean, obviously these are the faithful. but the reaction that you saw from them was they were reacting to a president who they knew wasn't going to be able to i think rise to the moment of 2008 and i don't think everybody was expecting him to do that. so what i call it was a proceed either tick pragmatism because

it gave the faithful what they needed to hear. you could see it in the teary eyes and all of the reactions. he actually spoke to each of the members of the democratic coalition, he talked about immigrants, he talked about women, he talked about gays, he talked about labor p. i mean, everybody was included. >> it wasn't the 2004 speech in boston. this is probably not his top five, maybe not even top ten speeches. >> but i think that was strategically smart because again, 2008 was lightning in a bottle and he was not going to be able to recreate that. what he needed to do was reassure. and i thought that he made us take ownership of the hope and change. and asking us to what i call sort of the jerry mcguire moment. help me keep helping you. and that's exactly what he's asking the country to do as he asks them to reelect him for another four years. >> and you were surprised, we both were, there was a lot of foreign policy in there. >> there really was. it was shocking considering that that is so low on the priority

list for voters right now. it is the economy, the economy, the economy. but he is running against somebody who is a former governor who has no experience on the foreign policy stage. and who just had a trip abroad which didn't go so well. so not only it they hit him on foreign policy, they had some fun with. >> but do you know who else became president with no foreign policy experience? a guy named barack obama. >> but he had a year in the senate. >> but that was interesting. the college students, the young kids who were so much a key part of 2008, did it they see something in this speech is that will excite them? >> i think they did see it. and again, i'll continue to say this, you can't compare to 2008 and i think that's what a lot of people do. y but the i think the young voter is a group of people that they're taking care of in the

get out the vote effort. the way they're organizing on college campuses, the way they're using the faithful in the young voters to reach out to their own colleagues and their own peers i think is something that's incredibly powerful. you don't see it every day, but i think that is one of the secret weapons of the obama campaign right now. >> but i do think it was strategic to keep it kind of not that great. because a big rap on him particularly as things have not gotten as good as people wanted is that he's all talk and no substance. so the idea of keeping the soaring talk to a minimum is a way to try to answer that. >> and of course there's something so big that happens three hours from now which is the jobs report comes out. we may not even be talking about the convectintion speech at 8:3f it's a lousy jobs report. thanks for being here. share the cheese fries. we'll talk more about some other political news right now because whatever you thought of the speech, it really blew up twitter. it was new record for a

political event, more than 9 million tweet s sent during president obama's address. by comparison, mitt romney topped out with a little more than 14,000 tweets per minute which actually sounds like a lot to me, also. the romney camp was quick to react to the president's speech. they responded with a theme we'll be hearing a lot. it says tonight president obama laid out the choice in this election, making the case for more of the same politics that have not worked for the past four years. he offered more promises, but he hasn't kept the promises he made four years ago. americans will hold president obama accountable for his record, they know they're not better off and that it's time to change direction. that from the romney campaign. romney's running mate congressman paul ryan is in southern california this morning. last night he headlined a $25,000 a couple fund-raiser at an exclusive beverly hills hotel. earlier in the day at a campaign stop in colorado, ryan called

delegation giving each other high fives when she was doing the pledge. and i can't describe it. it was absolutely electric. >> that's wonderful. well, thanks for sharing that with us. some of us missed it, all those special moments. so we look forward to seeing them all today. it is 11 minutes past the hour. bermuda is bracing for hurricane leslie. category 1 storm could pass the eye wland this weekend. and people are being told to prepare for the worst. it is already bringing dangerous swells an currents to coastal areas of the island and here in the united states, the east coast is not out of play either. so let's get right to alexandra steel. she is at cnn hurricane headquarters. what can you tell us? >> it's not as bad as it could be for bermuda. bermuda sees hurricanes about three every ten years and it's moving farther east than we'd seen it before. this is the atlantic. we do have two hurricanes at play. there's leslie. here is michael. this is a category 2, it is

small, tight, powerful. 105-mile-an-hour winds. good news, won't affect anyone, won't affect land. so with that, our attention turns to leslie. now, right now it's category 1, maximum sustained winds at 75 miles an hour. what's happened is it has sat over the same space, kind of the cold water for the last 18 hours or so. so we have not seen any intensification. so that is the good news. here is the projected path. now, you can see here is bermuda right now, it's about 430 miles south/southeast of bermuda, expected to make the past farther east than earlier thought sunday morning. so here are the impacts. this area east of haley fax cou halifax could seat biggest impacts. but it's a monster storm. winds at 185 miles an hour. and so we could see especially sunday morning, that's when kind of the biggest wind threat will be. we'll have more coming up. >> all right.

here. she has magical powers. also joining me and also with magical powers, former adviser to bill clinton and also our friend republican strategist. an marks i want to start with you because you are our resident republican this morning. and also because i read your twitter feed at night. and i read something you wrote last night, you said that this speech from the president was presidential. >> i thought so. >> explain. >> it was not the soaring rhetoric, it was not the 2004 candidate, it was not the 2008 candidate. it wasn't that memorable speech that just lit your hair on fire and you wanted to go out and follow barack obama down whatever path he led you. this was a much more somber tone, it was one where he admitted failures. it was one where we saw him with gray hair for the first time and departments on his fender as he likes to say. but it was presidential i thought. it was one where he tried to portray himself as firmly in control commander in chief and

the firmly in control president. i think he did what he had to do. not the best speech i've ever heard from barack obama, but the most presidential speech i've ever heard from barack obama. >> you're smiling. >> she loved the speech. i don't have to say anything. i think it was very forceful, resolute president, very strategic. aimed at undecideds. aimed at the middle. i love that he said i admit my mistakes. we haven't been perfect. but i thought it was very hopeful. and it was pretty terrific. maybe not the best speech ever in the history of conventions, but i thought it was a really excellent speech and i think more importantly an amazing three days for the democrats. >> we've been talking about foreign policy. how much foreign policy and how much bragging about foreign policy was really in the speech.

let's play the bite where he talks about the republican experience on foreign policy. >> my opponent and his running mate are new to foreign policy. but from all that we've seen and heard, they want to take us back to an era of blustering and blundering that cost america so takerly. after all, you don't call russia our number one enemy, not al qaeda, russia, unless you're still stuck in a cold war mind warp. >> now, polls show the president does have an advantage on leadership, but this election no one really thinks will is going to be about about foreign policy. why spend so much time on this? >> i honestly think it's because those were the areas where he could get some serious digs in to mitt romney. that was one. and talking about the fact that mitt romney went to great

britain one of the united states' greatest allies and made them angry and had a big blunder there. so i think that he definitely did talk a lot about foreign policy and substance much more than we expected, but i think it really was a forum for him to tweak him. >> you mentioned specifics. i want to put up a full screen of the five goals the president laid out for the new term, among them create 1 million new manufacturing jobs, cut oil imports in half by 2020, cut growth of college tuition and two other goals here. these are goals. but this is not a very specific hyper state of the union presidential plan. is this impressive to you, anna? >> you know, again, it's not the most impressed i've of been by barack obama, but i'm also not unimpressed. i love a good political speech whether it's a republican, a democrat, a libertarian, a vegetarian or hungarian.

i think mitt romney did what he had to do in his speech and i thought the foreign policy stuff was very interesting for two reasons. first of all, he tried to make it up on the israel. we'll all remember that the day before the awkward snafu when it came to amending the party platform on the issue of jerusalem being the capital of israel, something that the party platform had taken up and it was an embarrassing awkward moment where there were a lot of boos from the floor. but also everything in life is relative. and four years ago, he was on defense on foreign policy against a very experienced john mccain. four years later, he's on offense. but to quote your former bosses, bill clinton, it takes a lot of brass for barack obama to pick on foreign policy. >> richard, you're smiling. you're already happy because anna did your work for you this morning. >> it was a patriot triy thtrio.

areas of the island and here in the united states, parts of the east coast are already feeling some of the storm's effects, as well. so let's get right to alexandra steel at cnn hurricane headquarters. pretty menacing, right? >> yeah, it is a big storm. not that organized, but what we're seeing right now, 75-mile-an-hour sustained winds. so it's a category 1. the eye isn't that con send trach, but what we'll see is this wind field is so massive, so the question is, it will pass east of per nbermuda. won't made a direct here. from the center of the cone to bermuda is 190 miles. from the edge of the cone to bermuda is 45 miles. but we will see it pass especially on sunday morning. that's when it looks as though it will make its closest pass. but it is a big storm. and here are the potential impacts. we already have a tropical storm

watch in effect. that means we'll see tropical storm conditions within the next 48 to 60 hours. tropical storm force winds are massive from the center, they send out 185 miles. hurricane force winds extend out 35 miles. so u.s. impacts, big waves and rip currents believe it or not, all the way from florida to cape cod. even in new jersey they're seeing three and four foot waves now. so really deadly rip currents the biggest issue with this. so east coasters, stay out of the water this weekend. >> she has a big footprint there. we'll check back in with you. thank you very much, alexandra. so let's head over to john in charlotte. >> president obama capped off two weeks of political drama last night. the conventions are over. and there are a lot of people who say the conventions don't matter anymore. but i submit there is always something you have never seen before here. always something. and i tried to find that something in the last two weeks and i documented it on twitter

he's a ball assistant, a military vet and an amputee. >> this is my running leg. this is u.s. army and my purple heart badge from afghanistan. >> ryan lost his leg two years ago in a land mine explosion while serving in afghanistan. his first tour of duty as an infantryman in the army. >> i remember my guys yelling ied. so i didn't know i was injured in the beginning. i was just kind of in shock. and so then they started screaming where's mac, where's mac. so i started kind of putting my hand up to see if they could find me and then i ended up crawling out of the ditch, grabbing my spot leader's hand and picking myself up and looking at my foot and realizing that my toes weren't there anymore. >> all ryan says he could think about after his injury was getting better for his son born just five months after that blast. >> that was probably the biggest thing running through my head

that i was going to be a dad and it wasn't the same for me. >> ryan says it was his father that gave him the strength to pull through. >> one of my final surgeries that i went through, i was in excruciating pain because they just shaved my bone and i laid in the hospital bed screaming for about half an hour. i kicked everybody out of the room besides my dad because he's the only person that i really felt like i could be that, you know, vulnerable with. and so my dad held my hand and dealt with that with me. >> incredibly ryan was back up and walking in two months, running in three. playing sports like basketball, soccer and volleyball. in time, an army commander impressed with his athleticism told him he should try out to become a u.s. open ball person. it is a fiercely competitive process and ryan had never even played tennis. >> kind of like a ball person

somewh? what is that? so i went to the tryout and they were like you can throw a tennis ball. and that's when i used the word, you know, i can throw -- i've thrown a hand grenade, so i think i can handle a tennis ball. >> now he assists tennis stars. off the court, ryan who is still in the army works as an adaptive sports coordinator helping other wounded vets getting a difference again. >> i want them to realize that life's not over and that you can still do a lot of things and overcome your injuries and move on and get through them because that's what life's about is getting through the hard times and getting to the better times. >> ryan continues to beat the odds. he is training to run in the 2012 pair wlim piralympicss in . this is an impressive young man and he's so proud to be a soldier, he wanted to go back to the front lines and continue to fight believe it or not. >> what a nice inspiring story.

good morning to you, welcome to "early start." i'm zoraida sambolin in new york. >> and i'm john berman live from the midnight diner in charlotte, north carolina. it is 6:00 a.m. in the east. we are following breaking news out of china this morning. a series of earthquakes killing 43 people. the four quakes in china, range from 4.8 to 5.6. china's state media reports the quakes damaged more than 20,000 homes as well. for the second time this week, southern california has been rattled by an earthquake, the 3.5 quake hit just after midnight and according to the u.s. geological survey, the epicenter was located two miles from west hollywood. no damage is reported. a 3.2 magnitude earthquake rattled beverly hills on monday, john. >> all right, zoraida, we're

here in charlotte at the midnight diner because the conventions are over and the hall shut down. president obama made his case accepting his party's nomination. the faithful in the crowd loved it but critics maybe less so. the reviews have been mixed. the mission was to frame the election as a choice, a choice between two visions of america's future. i'm joinled by cnn's dana bash and a plate of cheese fries here at the dine rdiner. to me it seemed like a save reserve speech. >> it did and it was a speech given by someone who has changed dramatically, understandably so over the past four years when he was the candidate of hope and change. the message that he said and that he clearly wanted to get across was that he is somebody who will continue to work hard and tell people the truth. >> barack obama accepted his party's nomination with the kind of soaring rhetoric that got him

elected four years ago, except hope and change were replaced by reality check. >> i recognize that times have changed since i first spoke to this convention. times have changed and so have i. i'm no longer just a candidate. i'm the president. >> yes, we can now a plea for patience. >> america, i never said this journey would be easy and i won't promise that now. yes, our path is harder but it leads to a better place. yes our road is longer but we travel it together. we don't turn back. we leave no one behind. >> but he still sprinkled in the familiar obama or tri. >> our problems can be solved and our challenges can be met and the path we offer may be harder but it leads to a better place and i'm asking you to choose that future.

oil imports in half by 2020. vice president joe biden took on the role of eyewitness to the president when he made tough decisions. >> i'm here to tell you what i think you already know, but i watch it up close, bravery resides in the heart of barack obama and time and time again i witnessed him summon it. this man has courage in his soul, compassion in his heart and a spine of steel! >> and biden delivered the bumper sticker line he loves. >> we can now proud my say what you've heard me say the last six months. osama bin laden is dead and general motors is alive! >> the night belonged to the president, the democratic nominee from 2004 offered one of the most memorable one-liners of the night. >> ask osama bin laden if he is better off now than he was four

years ago. >> and when it comes to lasting images from this convention, it is this moment, former congresswoman gabby giffords shot through the head last year and now walking without a cane on stage to recite the pledge of allegiance. >> liberty and justice for all. >> dana and i are joined by cnn contributor and washington correspondent for the new yorker ryan lizza, sort of professorial in the tweed this morning. your reaction seemed to be what people were saying last night, which was, eh. >> i think critics watching for speeches two past two weeks have nothing to say. i thought he was trying to do a lot with this speech. he had a lot of very specific -- i thought frankly poll tested lines. you could almost see the strategists saying you need this policy for ohio, you've got to talk about wind in iowa,

messaging for specific swing states and get in shots at romney, almost surprisingly, took on a negative attacking tone in a few places. at the end you had this long rif about citizenship and view of the role of government in society. so i didn't think it was the greatest speech obama speech in terms of a sweeping retore cal speech, nothing like his 2004 speech, but in terms of getting work done, i thought it accomplished something. if you were a voter who cared about what romney would do or obama would do going forward, o bam ma's speech had more for you as far as vision for america. >> aides were saying they were going to offer more specifics and that he was going to be more concrete in his proposals. i was not, not to be cynic, because we're not cynics, but he's running for a second term. if he doesn't accomplish these things at the end of the term,

it's over. >> i think if you looked at mitt romney's reach, he gave the speech of his life, a speech that will stand up, obama's speech may be nor forgettable in the short term. but as you read his speech as an end of a trilology what the democrats were able to achieve may have a bigger impact in this election. if the they can make this a choice, maybe they succeeded here. >> i will say in terms of the two conventions which seems to have more oomph, the democrats, one it's better to bat second because they could respond to everything the republicans said so that helps. but i just felt like this convention came off a little bit better than tampa did. >> we were both on the floor at both and there was -- i think objectively speaking there was more energy in this at this convention. the question is, we're talking about preaching to the faithful

at both -- >> i would still be surprised if there's a big bounce because you know the dynamics of this election are tiny vote of undecided voters. >> energy bounce remains to be seen. whatever you thought of the speech, whatever you thought of the energy, it certainly blew up twitter last night. more than 9 million tweets during his address, close to 53,000 tweets a min u by comparison, mitt romney topped out with 14,000 per minute which doesn't sound half bad to me. the romney campaign was quick to react to the president's speech with a theme we will be hearing a lot the next two months. here's part of their statement. tonight president obama laid out the choice in this election making the case for more of the same policy that's haven't worked for the past four years. he offered more promises but he hasn't kept the promises he's made four years ago. americans will hold president obama accountable for his record. they know they are not better off and it's time to change

direction. paul ryan, mitt romney's running mate is waking up in southern california. he headlined a $25,000 a couple fundraiser at an exclusive beverly hills hotel. earlier in colorado he called president obama the most partisan president he's ever seen. something we'll be hearing in the next couple of weeks. beau biden, the son of vice president joe biden, he'll be live here at 8:00 a.m. eastern. he loves his dad. let's see what he thinks about his speech last night. back to zoraida. >> we have breaking news into the cnn newsroom. prince harry is now in afghanistan for his second tour of duty. the news confirmed by the ministry of defense. he'll serve for four months an apache pilot. this comes four and a half years after his last tour. prince harry is headed to afghanistan for his second tour of duty. this comes of course just weeks

after naked pictures surfaced of him in las vegas. timing very interesting there. 11 minutes past the hour. bermuda is bracing for hurricane leslie. the category one storm could pass the island this sunday. it is bringing dangerous swells and current to coastal areas of the island. here in the united states, parts of the east coast are already feeling some of the storm's effects as well. let's head over to alexandra steele. what can you tell us? >> the u.s. impacts will be two-fold. we're going to see dangerous and deadly rip current and strong waves. here's hurricane leslie. the question is how close of a pass will it make to bermuda. right now it's moving north at 1 mile per hour, really stationary for the last 18 hours. max mimum sustained winds at 20 miles per hour. we'll watch the path stay east of bermuda. you can see well east now but the effects will be in bermuda

race. how well did the president do with everyone still on the fence? here's tom foreman. >> as our focus group sat here using the dial tested devices to record their moments about the speech, it was fascinating to see the reaction from all of you compared with people in the hall. i want to back up and have you first raise your hands if you come into tonight truly undecided. let's take a look at the group here. basically everyone is undecided. the question is, doid president obama make them more decided? look at the reaction when he said one of his signature lines, something they've been pushing about moving forward, not back. >> after all we've been through, i don't believe that rolling back regulations on wall street will help the small business woman expand or the laid off construction worker keep his home. we have been there and tried

that and we're not going back. we are moving forward, america. >> the people in the hall just loved that. people here not so much. why do you think that whole idea of we're going to keep moving forward and not moving back didn't resonate more with the voters here? >> i'm not sure i believe all of the things he said about going forward and not going backward. i'm not convinced. >> you're not convinced. >> what did you think when you heard that? >> i was convinced. i believe him. >> you do believe him. you would have been one of the people pushing the dials up. why do you believe him when you don't? >> i think he's sincere and honest. >> reporter: let me ask the men. what did you think when you heard that? the men by and large seem more skeptical than the woman? >> i think he was sincere but i don't believe him. he wants to move forward but he still lives in the past. from everything i've heard they are still blaming bush and that was four years ago. >> one of the things i'm curious

about here and want to ask over here about, when i watch your reactions, i couldn't help but wonder if some you felt you heard this before, good, bad or otherwise and people seem almost fatigued. did you like it? were you inspired? >> i am quite sleepy. the statement gets lost. perhaps it's not flashy or what not. i agree with the statement but there's so much else going on in the speech. >> let's take a look at one other quick section here. one of the biggest earliest spikes here came when he talked about energy independence. look what happened when he talked about gas prices. >> in the last year alone, we cut oil imports by 1 million barrels a day, more than any other administration in recent history. and today the united states of america is less dependent on foreign oil than at any time in the last two decades.

>> reporter: he talked about less dependence on foreign oil as a group you liked it. who liked that statement? somebody had to -- what did you like about it? >> i like hearing how they are going to lower gas prices. americans are suffering with gas just under $4 a gallon and we keep -- we need to find other ways around that other than putting wind mills on every corner or forcing people to use mercury filled light bulbs in her house. >> there seemed to be focus on pocketbook issues, whenever he talked about actual practical pocketbook issues rkz people liked it better. were you one of those people? >> yes. >> reporter: why does that matter so much? >> we're all concerned about our pocketbook and where spending is at. >> the word from the undecided voters, that was cnn's tom foreman. in two hours the conventions might be an afterthought, an

with the democratic national convention now behind him, president obama faces another pivotal test. this morning the jobs report for the month of august is set to be released. this is in about two hours, with the dow and s&p 500 closing at the highest points during the obama presidency on thursday, it could result in a boost for the president headed into the debates and joining me now to preview the jobs report is the

managing editor rex harris. thanks for getting up early for us. you are forecasting what it's going to say. we're going to show it to viewers and i want you to explain whether this is good news or bad news for president obama on the heels of his speech. >> it is good news. the forecast from the economists we talked to is for 120,000 jobs added i've seen some up about 130,000, it's not great, but it continues to tell the story of slow, steady gains. unfortunately, it's not enough to bring the unemployment rate down. we're still going to stay at 8.3%. >> the good news heading into the s&p and dow, that is good news for president obama. >> absolutely. we've had now since i think the market hit bottom march of 2009. since then, it's basically doubled under president obama. it's a big story. >> but we were way down? >> we were, absolutely. but i think what president obama can say there, am i really that

bad for business and strangling businesses as the republicans claim? if that were the case, why would the stock market have doubled over that time? i think it's an interesting story to tell. >> as the average american is watching the numbers come out, how does it affect them? >> it's very interesting, as the stock market has gone up, individual investors have pulled out of the market. they've been really they've been bitten before by it and just they don't want to get involved in the risks and don't trust the stock market right now. a lot of people just aren't participating in this market advance. but, the stock market is a real indicator and does present -- it shows you that there isn't as much anxiety in the economy. when it tanks is when people really get the panic. >> we're running out of time here but quickly because we're chatting about it earlier. you said there are some concerns for the obama administration coming forward. what are they? >> next week we have the federal reserve. now, part of the reason the stock market has been going up is because of the fed. if they disappoint, you could

accomplishments and layout the vision for the future and fire up the crowd. >> he may have fired up the crowd and there are people saying overnight, and i agree, this is not the best speech he has ever given, not the 2004 convention speech or 2008. he has given better speeches than this, wouldn't you agree? >> i think his goal was different. in this case he had to do many tests. he had to combat the terrible commercials laid out by the super pacs and show that he is presidential, that he made very tough decisions. >> presidential is a word that people have used and he used. he went out of his way to tell you, i'm the president, as if people didn't know. he also talked about immigration a little bit. i want to play a sound bite from that. >> you're the reason a young immigrant who grew up here and went to school here and pledged alliance to our flag will no longer be deported from the only

country she's ever called home. why selfless solders won't be kicked out. military because of who they love and families can say to those who served us so bravely, welcome home. welcome home. you did that. you did that! >> you did that. a very interesting use of language construction right there. is that in response to the republican's constant refrain of you built that? >> i think it was a way of showing that it was americans that resulted in these policies that he put forth. >> what does he need to do coming out of this convention to seem the deal, if you think he can do that? >> he needs to continue to layout the message that there are two stark choices, a stark choice for a candidate for the top 2% and a president who has shown that he is fighting for the lives of every average

american. >> representative, i know you're friends with former congresswoman gabrielle giffords and i was in the arizona delegation last night when she recited the pledge of allegia e allegiance. what was it like for you to see that? >> i was so overwhelmed. i know the people around me gasped because it was so emotional to see her out there after all of her struggles to see her so committed to the democratic future of this country. >> some of her friends in the delegation told me she so badly want d to be at the convention but she was nervous. it was a big crowd and she's heavily involved with rehabilitation, she was nervous about doing something more -- the pledge was something she could handle. i think she knocked it out of the park last night. >> struggle to lift her arm but yet see her do it. >> the jobs report comes out this morning. if this number is not strong, if

welcome back to "early start." bermuda is getting ready for hurricane leslie. the category 1 could pass the island this weekend. here's what it looks like from space, it is already bringing dangerous swells and currents to coastal areas of the island. here in the united states, parts of the east coast are feeling the storm effects as well. alexandra steele, what is she doing now? >> it is now -- you can still see still southeast of bermuda. but the u.s. will feel impact. there will be deadly and dangerous rip current and also some very high waves along the eastern seaboard. here's a look at the hurricane.

again, leslie has been really just sitting where it is for the last 18 hours. last advisory as of 5:00 a.m. has it now moving north at 1 mile per hour. it is beginning to make a move. here's its track. it will pass and not make a direct hit to bermuda. it will pass east of bermuda. how close it will be is the question. the time for this because the swath of leslie is so big, the wind field with this is bo bohemith. just to give you perspective, there's a 45 mile radius here between bermuda and the edge of the cone. now tropical storm force winds with this thing extend out 185 miles from the center. regardless, we will see big time winds in bermuda this weekend. then we'll see it move northeast and actually new foundland we could see really big waves. hurricane leslie, bermuda

impact, tropical storm watch in effect for the next 48 to 60 hours or so. tropical storm force winds extend out 185 miles from the center. hurricane force winds extend out 35. winds and high surf by sunday. that's the biggest threat and the biggest impacts will be sunday morning. big waves and rip current for us in the u.s. all the way from florida to cape cod, you'll see it even 3 and 4 foot waves now off the coast of new jersey. >> i know you'll be keeping an eye on this all day. thank you very much. breaking news right now related to the royal family in britain. just this hour we've learned prince harry has reported for duty in afghanistan. it is his second tour of military duty. cnn royal correspondent max foster joins us live from london. what have you learned? >> relief to talk about this at last. this has been an announcement made under very tight security.

you'll remember the last tour of afghanistan prince harry had to be pulled out because there was a media blackout and that got broken by a u.s. publication. this time under a different system under tight security we've been get giving reporting access to him but only after he arrived. these are pictures ever him arriving a few hours ago. he is an apache pilot but will work in afghanistan sitting in the back seat of that attack helicopter. largely in a surveillance role but he will be expected to get involved in close combat as well. he's firing the guns in the back seat effectively. that's his role for the next four months. >> the timing is curious because we have been seeing pictures of him from las vegas that have been posted all over the place of him naked when he was attending a party. how long has this been in the works? >> well, it's been in the work for many, many months and certainly over the weekend when

those pictures came out, everyone was fully aware of the deployment and it was all set up and he was to be going. all of the tabloid reporters say today once the news came out that this weekend this vegas was all a big blowout before he went to afghanistan for what his commander says is a different, dangerous job. i have to say, zoraida, there are different sides to prince harry, what he always tries to do is be himself in whatever role he's in. he's a 27-year-old out in las vegas, he's going to behave in that way and in the military, he's going to be very, very serious. he takes it very seriously that role. you'll certainly not see antics in afghanistan as far as he's concerned. >> we wish him well. max foster, thank you very much. 43 minutes past the hour. let's get you up to date on the top story, starting with a warning from the u.s. to iraq. don't let iran use iraqi air
